WORLD : Shamir Has Hernia Operation

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir was in good condition after a hernia operation today and was expected to be released from the hospital in several days, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The one-hour operation was conducted under local anesthesia without complications, the spokeswoman said. The operation had been planned in advance and arranged to fit the prime minister’s schedule.
Shamir, 74, who entered the hospital Sunday, maintained his authority as prime minister rather than transfer his duties temporarily to Vice Premier Shimon Peres.
