EAST BERLIN — Former East German leader Erich Honecker, toppled by a peaceful protest movement late last year, has kidney cancer, the official ADN news agency said today.
It said the 77-year-old Honecker, removed from office in October and being investigated on suspicion of abuse of office, has been examined at an East Berlin clinic.
“A report supplied to the state prosecutor says that Honecker is suffering from a malignant tumor of the kidney, which doctors believe needs treatment,” ADN said. It said the prosecutor has decided not to jail Honecker until treatment can be carried out. Doctors must decide whether to operate.
