Players trading baskets, fans trading chants, coaches trading tirades. If it’s Burroughs High versus Hart High, it must be a Foothill League showdown.
And a good one it was, the Indians from Burroughs rallying twice to upset the host Indians from Hart, 74-71, on Tuesday night in the league opener.
For Burroughs (7-6 overall), the defending league champion, the victory was a case of now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t basketball. Burroughs shuffled ballhandlers effectively, keeping its archrival off-balance and a step behind throughout most of a fast-paced second half in which Burroughs erased a 38-34 halftime deficit.
Burroughs grabbed its first lead, 46-45, after a 12-2 run early in the third quarter, then went ahead to stay on a three-point shot by center Ray Velasquez to make the score 64-63 with six minutes left.
Senior guard Marnie Calderon knifed through Hart’s defense for 18 points to tie Hart’s Chad Fotheringham for game-high scoring honors. S.J. Boldvich (17 points), Velasquez (16) and Mike Rossiter (12) also scored in double figures for Burroughs.
