Boris Becker, saying he is “totally exhausted” and unable to play, has pulled out of West Germany’s first-round Davis Cup matches starting Friday against the Netherlands and may not play Davis Cup this year, a Hamburg newspaper said.
The Hamburger Morgenpost said Becker contacted team coach Niki Pilic after returning to his home in Monte Carlo from the Australian Open tournament in Melbourne, where he was ousted in the quarterfinals by Mats Wilander.
Becker, 22, was to lead the West German team for its home series against the Dutch at Bremen.
