THE SIDELINES : Soviets Agree to Glasnost Race

PHOENIX — Soviet amateur jockeys will race against a team of U.S. riders on Feb. 25 at Turf Paradise Race Course in an event being billed as the International Glasnost Race.

It will be part of a Festival of the Horse weekend, a stakes program that includes the $100,000 Coors-Phoenix Gold Cup.

The Phoenix track said today that Dsalaev Kasbek, director of the Central Moscow Hippodrome, notified the track by mail that the Soviet delegation would include three male jockeys, one female rider, a translator and two non-riding officials.

“I think that your initiative with the International Glasnost Race will serve to further relations between our two countries on a non-governmental level,” wrote Kasbek, who also is president of the International Breeding Congress of Socialist Countries.
