NEW YORK — A key index monitoring advertising placed by companies seeking employees was down three points in January compared to December, a nationwide survey said today.
The Conference Board, a nonprofit research organization, said in a survey that its Help-Wanted Advertising Index slipped to 146 in January, down from 149 in December.
The monthly indicator, first set at 100 in 1967, is based on the help-wanted advertising volume in 51 major newspapers across the United States.
“The January figure reading is up only one point from the November figure, but five points below the October figure and substantially lower than the year-ago figure of 155,” the survey said.
Among regions recording a decline was the Pacific, down to 269 from 290.
