ROUNDUP : Relay Team Propels El Camino Real to Comeback Win Over Venice, 64-63

El Camino Real High’s 1,600-meter relay team beat Venice’s by 15 yards to lead the Conquistadores to a 64-63 nonconference victory Friday at Venice.
The foursome of Irvin Johnson, Harris Soifer, John Speier and Jaffers Bailey timed 3 minutes 34.9 seconds in the meet’s last event.
“We took it pretty much from the front,” El Camino Real Coach Milt Goffman said. “Each runner picked up a few yards.”
Bailey, a sophomore, also won the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles in 16.3 and 45.6, respectively. Speier won the 200 in 23.4.
Venice’s Danny Jordan, the defending City Section champion in the 1,600, paced the Gondoliers with wins in the 800 (2:03.2) and 1,600 (4:44.2).
In another meet:
Chatsworth 72, San Fernando 46--Lori Mertes won three events to lead the Chancellors in a Northwest Valley Conference girls’ meet at San Fernando.
Mertes, fifth in the high jump in last year’s state championships, cleared 4 feet 10 inches Friday. She also won the shotput (31-8) and the triple jump (no mark).
San Fernando’s Felicia Howard won the 100 (12.9) and 200 (27.2).
