P.M. BRIEFING : U.S. Enters Greyhound Strike

WASHINGTON — Negotiations in the 11-day-old Greyhound bus strike shifted to Washington today as a federal mediator met with union officials representing striking drivers.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, which tries to settle transportation strikes, said director Bernard DeLury was meeting with the union to discuss the issues of the strike. The agency said no talks with both the union and the company were planned for today.
About 7,600 drivers and office and maintenance workers walked out on March 2 after the union and the company failed to reach agreement on a new contract.
Meanwhile, a Greyhound bus headed into Hartford, Conn., was hit by gunfire this morning, Connecticut state police said. The shooting occurred on Interstate 84 in Farmington, Conn., just west of Hartford, at about 10:45 a.m., said state police spokesman Adam Berluti.
Investigators at the Union Station terminal where the bus arrived about 11 a.m. were talking to passengers. The bus had what appeared to be a bullet hole on the driver’s side in the baggage area.
