Santa Monica : Beach Renovation Planned

The City Council hired a landscape architecture firm this week to plan a multimillion-dollar renovation of Santa Monica State Beach from south of the pier to Bay Street.
The city manager was instructed to negotiate a $84,000-contract with the firm of POD/Sasaki to plan the renovation. Planning should be completed by September.
The renovation area includes Santa Monica’s beach bike path, pedestrian promenade, outdoor volleyball courts, lifeguard headquarters, “original muscle beach gymnastics equipment area” and two public restroom buildings, according to a staff report.
The city’s last beach renovation, completed in 1987, updated the beach south of Bay Street to the city’s southern border at a cost of $5.5 million. The two-year project renovated park land, parking lots, the bike path and restroom structures.
