Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Shuttle’s Landing Gear Said to Be Safe

A potential problem with the shuttle Discovery’s nose landing gear has been resolved, keeping the ship on track for blastoff April 12 to ferry the $1.5-billion Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, the mission commander said. Discovery’s five-member, all-veteran crew flew to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida from Houston to review emergency procedures and to participate in a dress-rehearsal countdown today and Tuesday. Discovery was hauled to the launch pad despite questions about a 6-inch nut that holds bearings in place around the ship’s nose landing gear axle. An analysis showed the shuttle was safe to fly.
