Agoura High’s Bryan Dameworth raced to nation-leading 1,500- and 3,200-meter times Saturday at the Santa Barbara Easter Relays at Santa Barbara City College.
Dameworth clocked 3 minutes 55.8 seconds in the 1,500 to outdistance Camarillo’s Derek Kite (4:00.00). In the 3,200, the Charger senior ran 9:01.2, just off his personal best of 9:00.27, run in the state championships last June.
Abe Valdez of Camarillo finished second in 9:18.7.
The marks are Dameworth’s latest national bests. In February, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, he ran 4:13.1 for a mile at the Times/Eagle meet to lead the indoor rankings in that event.
Hitting: San Fernando’s John Najar has equaled the single-season school record of four home runs, set by Josh Bergara in 1988. Najar (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) is also on a pace to shatter the school single-season mark for runs batted in with 24, set last season by All-City Section shortstop Bobby Corrales. Najar has 15 RBIs in six league games, with 11 remaining.
Bobby McRae’s two-hit defeat of Chatsworth last week brought an end to Nestor Martinez’s nine-game hitting streak . . . . St. Genevieve’s Josh Smith has hit safely in each of the Valiants’ eight games.
Junior Jason Kane leads Oak Park in every offensive category except runs scored. Kane is batting .533 (16 for 30) with four doubles, two triples, one home run, eight RBIs and eight stolen bases.
