THEATER : Comedy in Bloom in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Theater-goers in the mood for comedy this weekend should check out Moorpark College’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” a dark, tongue-in-cheek satire of all kinds of things including B movies, science fiction and musicals.

The hero is one Seymour Krelborn, insecure but well-meaning, who falls in love with fellow floral shop employee Audrey, a vulnerable, naive bleached-blonde with a penchant for low-cut black dresses and spiked heels.

But Audrey is dating a sadistic dentist who is like a relic from the Spanish Inquisition. While on a plant-buying mission, Seymour discovers a strange and interesting specimen that has an appetite for blood and human flesh. He christens it Audrey II.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is based on a 1960s B movie by Roger Corman, which ranks as one of the oddest cult movies of that decade.
