Saints and Sinners: Told that “Means of Ascent” author Robert Caro was in town, Rep. Jake Pickle (D-Tex.), said in Austin, Tex.: “Who let him in?” But Caro isn’t surprised. He said he just wanted to write about the 1948 election when Lyndon B. Johnson beat former Gov. Coke Stevenson in a U.S. Senate primary. But Pickle said of Caro’s saintly portrait of Stevenson: “We didn’t think of him as a man of vision. . . . He was just ‘Calculatin’ Coke.’ ”
