N.C. State Rejects Valvano Plan

Jim Valvano’s attorney pressed for a hearing with North Carolina State officials Thursday as university lawyers rejected a proposal to allow Valvano to stay as basketball coach.
Woody Webb, Valvano’s lawyer, said the school has turned down a request by Valvano that he be allowed to stay. The request included a proposal that Valvano’s contract be amended to contain specific expectations.
The N.C. State Board of Trustees decided by a 9-3 vote last week to find a way to terminate Valvano. The school’s basketball program is under scrutiny for NCAA violations and allegations of point shaving by former players.
Webb said Valvano is willing to renegotiate his contract, including a $500,000 buyout clause that has become a sticking point in the talks.
