CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : IRVINE : Speeding Van Kills 2, Hurts 1 on Freeway

Two men were killed and a third was injured after a Mission Viejo man drove his van through a cone barrier and slammed into a highway maintenance truck, authorities said. The van’s driver, Eulalio Castillo, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene on the San Diego Freeway near Irvine Center Drive. Also killed was Kevin Smith, 26, of Lancaster, said California Highway Patrol officers. The injured man, Robert Ornelas, 25, of La Puente was hospitalized in fair condition. The accident occurred as Smith and a crew of workers were repainting white stripes and replacing reflective lane markers on the freeway.
