MANILA — Philippine security forces have captured a rebel officer who took part in a bloody coup attempt last December, the military said Sunday.
Air force Maj. Wilfredo Mateo was arrested along with a woman companion Saturday inside a cockfighting compound in a Manila suburb, it said.
Mateo helped seize an air base near Manila from which rebel planes flew to bomb the presidential palace during the coup attempt, the military said.
He was the 10th fugitive officer to be captured since the December coup attempt, the sixth such plot President Corazon Aquino has faced in four years in office. Mateo said he was given $45 to take part in the revolt.
