‘King’ Does Not Overcome Critics: “King,” the troubled London musical about Martin Luther King Jr., opened Monday to a four-minute standing ovation but poor critical reviews. Maureen Paton in the Daily Express wrote: “This treatment comes across as a simplified version for children. It may be well-meaning, but it’s an insult to adults.” The Daily Telegraph’s Charles Spencer suggested that a musical about the making of “King” would have made a better show. The opening for the Piccadilly Theater production was postponed three times. Various directors and writers, including poet Maya Angelou, who wrote the lyrics, left the project.
