Edberg Eliminated by Aguilera; Becker Struggles Before Winning

MONTE CARLO, Monaco — Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden lost a pair of tiebreakers Thursday and was eliminated from the Monte Carlo tennis tournament by Juan Aguilera of Spain, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).

Edberg, who led in both sets of the third-round match before Aguilera came back, said, “I had my opportunities to win, but I missed on some important points.”

Second-seeded Boris Becker also struggled but beat Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Ninth-seeded Jim Courier, the last American in the tournament, was ousted by Tomas Muster of Austria, 6-4, 6-4. Muster will play Aguilera in the quarterfinals.

Becker will meet seventh-seeded Emilio Sanchez, who defeated Guy Forget of France, 6-2, 6-2.

In other third-round matches, Marc Rosset beat David Engel of Switzerland, 6-0, 6-4; Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union defeated Jaime Yzaga of Peru, 6-2, 6-1; Horst Skoff of Austria outlasted Jordi Arrese of Spain, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-5, and Henri Leconte upended sixth-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-3, 6-4.
