Senior right-hander J.J. Fisher (2-5) allowed just two singles to Biola (13-28) as UC San Diego won on the road, 4-1. Fisher had a one-hitter going into the ninth.
Henry Jimenez and Ernie Isola both went three for five for UCSD (17-15-2). Biola’s Tim Worrell, the brother of St. Louis Cardinal reliever Todd Worrell, had seven strikeouts in defeat.
James Ferguson threw six-hit ball over seven innings and struck out 10 as the University of San Diego defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 9-1, in a nonconference baseball game.
USD’s Rick Doane hit his 13th home run of the season in the fifth with one on. The Toreros’ Rick Davis hit an inside-the-park homer to lead off the sixth. PLNC fell to 15-30-1, USD improved to 23-28.
MEN’S TENNIS
Top-seeded San Diego State breezed through the first round of the Western Athletic Conference championships with a 6-0 victory over host Colorado State.
The Aztecs’ Tole Marinovic beat Kevin Ponis, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. SDSU will play fifth-seeded Air Force today in the semifinals.
