WASHINGTON — Nelson R. Mandela, South African black leader freed after 27 years in jail, will visit President Bush at the White House next month and be feted with a ticker tape parade in New York City, organizers announced today.
Mandela, head of the African National Congress, will visit Washington and five other U.S. cities toward the end of June, said a news release by Fenton Communications, which represents the ANC.
An ANC source in New York said Mandela would arrive in the United States on June 20. A news conference to announce the exact date of the visit is scheduled here Tuesday.
Bush issued an invitation to Mandela in a telephone call last February, as soon as Mandela was released from prison where he had been serving a life sentence for plotting to overthrow the South African government.
