Monrovia : Historic Designation

The Myrtle Avenue business area was declared a historic district by the City Council on Tuesday, and guidelines were established to preserve the architectural character of the city’s century-old downtown buildings.
“We want to preserve in perpetuity the historical character of downtown,” said Donald R. Hopper, director of community development.
Along with the guidelines, which govern the look of renovated storefronts and new construction in the area, the council set up a Historic Review Committee made up of three city staff members, a representative of the Downtown Merchants Assn. and a representative of the city’s historic preservation groups.
The committee will review every building or demolition permit in the downtown area that affects the exterior architectural appearance of the building.
