The Lone Traveler

The May 6 article describing Jerry Hulse’s trip to Venice (“As Time Floats By) greatly strengthened my dream to visit that city. He created a very romantic picture. But I am left with one question.
Over the years I have read and enjoyed the trips he made so imaginable. Now I am jolted. Jerry Hulse, like the rest of us, at least this once, failed to take along something he needed: a companion. I have traveled to England by myself and loved every minute, even knowing how much better it could have been if shared with the right friend.
My question is: Why would Hulse travel alone? It is about the same as Elizabeth Taylor going to a movie alone. I’ll bet you have been overwhelmed with volunteers.
