THE SIDELINES : Bugno Clinches Tour of Italy

VARESE, Italy — Gianni Bugno of Italy clinched the Tour of Italy today, the day before the race ends, when he won his third stage of the cycling event.
Riding through fog, cold and driving rain, Bugno took a 39-kilometer individual time trial in 58 minutes, four seconds.
Spain’s Marino Lejarreta finished a distant second, one minute, 20 seconds off the pace.
American Greg Lemond finished 12th, showing increasingly better form. Lemond hopes to duplicate his 1989 season, when he came off a mediocre Italian race to win the Tour de France and the world championship.
In the against-the-clock race, riders traveled the course at intervals, precluding the “drafting” that characterizes bicycle races.
