El Monte : Hike in Water Rates OKd

The City Council unanimously approved a 16.1% increase in water rates Tuesday, raising the cost from .078 cents to .09 cents per 100 gallons.
For the average customer with a $16.70 monthly bill, the increase will be $2.50. It is the first rate increase since May, 1987, and will go into effect by Aug. 1, Public Works Director Bob Pinniger said.
The increase will allow the service to break even in fiscal 1990-91 and offset the cost of $300,000 in water-main improvements scheduled for next year, Pinniger said. It reaffirmed a 1983 council decision to operate the water service, which serves about 3,000 business and residential customers, without subsidies.
