THE SIDELINES : Ryan’s Back Problem Pinpointed

DALLAS — Texas Rangers ace Nolan Ryan has a stress fracture in his back but should be able to start against Seattle on Saturday.
Angels orthopedist Lewis Yocum says Ryan has a hairline break in a bone caused by overuse, The Dallas Morning News reported today.
Yocum has prescribed a change in the medication Ryan has been taking for back trouble, plus an exercise program.
Ryan is expected to throw on Friday.
The 43-year-old pitcher went to Los Angeles on Wednesday to be examined by Yocum. The visit had been scheduled for Tuesday, but Ryan postponed it after recording his sixth no-hitter the night before.
Ryan is scheduled to pitch Saturday in “Guaranteed No-Hitter Night,” a promotion announced before Ryan’s no-hitter on Monday. If neither pitcher tosses a no-hitter, Mariners fans will get a free ticket to another Kingdome game.
