Beverly Hills : Water-Saving Steps in Effect

Watering lawns between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. is banned under water-saving rules that went into effect this month.
Other measures include a ban on daily watering, a ban on hosing of sidewalks and driveways, and a requirement that all leaks be repaired as soon as possible.
In addition, restaurant customers will get water only if they ask for it, according to a water conservation package adopted by the City Council at the request of the state Department of Water Resources and the Metropolitan Water District.
Persistent violators face fines of up to $500. City officials expect to work with gardeners and property owners to cut water use, said Fred Cunningham, a spokesman for the city.
A similar campaign resulted in a 12% reduction in water use during the 1977 drought, Cunningham said.
