Gainey, 36, is the 16th coach the club has hired since joining the NHL in 1967.
He had been a candidate for the general manager job two years ago, but Jack Ferreira was hired instead.
In 16 seasons with the Canadiens, he scored 239 goals and 262 assists and helped the Canadiens win Stanley Cups in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1986. He was team captain from 1981 to 1989 before leaving the Canadiens to serve as player-coach for a club in France.
Gainey succeeds Pierre Page, who left after two years to become Quebec’s general manager.
