New Opera Due: An opera on the life of Simon Bolivar may be in the future for tenor Placido Domingo and Los Angeles Music Center Opera. MCO has approached Scottish-American composer Thea Musgrave regarding a commission for such a work, according to John Howlett, speaking for the company. Musgrave and Peter Hemmings, MCO’s general director, are now “in discussions,” and the Spanish tenor is interested. The National Endowment for the Arts has given MCO a grant of $10,000 toward the project, Howlett said, but it is “too early for a formal announcement.” Presumably, he added, production would be “in the mid-1990s.”
