AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sun Valley Holds Off North Hollywood, 8-5

Sun Valley scored five times in the second inning to blow the game open, then had to hold on to score an 8-5 District 20 win over host North Hollywood in American Legion baseball action Wednesday.

Leading, 1-0, and facing North Hollywood’s Harry Marks (0-2), who had pitched on Sunday, Sun Valley (11-1) loaded the bases in the second inning on two walks and a single. Marlon McKinney and Roy Lozano then poked two-run singles, followed by Robert Aros’ run-scoring single to give Sun Valley a 6-0 lead.

McKinney finished with three runs batted in.

North Hollywood (1-14) came back against winner Robert Flores (4-0), scoring twice in the fourth inning and one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 8-4.

In the seventh inning, North Hollywood pushed across another run and had two runners on before Erik Martinez flied out to deep center field.

Dan Buffo had three hits for North Hollywood, while teammate Adrian Padilla doubled and singled.

Lozano added two hits for the winners, while Carlos Antigua hit a solo home run.

In other District 20 games:

Chatsworth 8, Encino-Crespi 1--Mike Mancuso, Greg Cox and Tommy Lee each had two hits to lead Chatsworth at Valley College.

Doug Van Horn (2-2) threw a four-hitter for Chatsworth (5-8).

Phillip Aghajanian (0-4) allowed one earned run in five innings for Encino-Crespi (5-8), which committed five errors.

Studio City 6, West Hills 3--Benjamin Villa threw a nine-hitter as Studio City won for just the third time in 14 games.

Villa walked two and struck out one. Leading, 1-0, he surrendered a three-run home run to Billy Blair in the sixth, but Studio City scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.

Tony Gonzales sparked the rally by leading off the sixth with a home run. Blair had two hits for West Hills (5-11).

Van Nuys-Notre Dame 17, Verdugo Hills 7--Van Nuys-Notre Dame pounded out 16 hits in a game at Notre Dame that was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame (7-6) avenged a loss to Verdugo Hills (7-6) earlier in the day in the completion of a resumed game.

Kevin Milligan paced Van Nuys-Notre Dame with three hits, including a double and a triple, and five RBIs. Bruno Paniccia (1-0), an outfielder making his first pitching appearance of the year, had three hits and drove in a run.

Reseda 20, Granada Hills 7--Tuti Rodriguez hit two home runs and drove in eight to lead Reseda (7-6) at home.

David Cipolla hit two home runs for Granada Hills.
