9th Adobe Day Doings

Take a century-size step back in time and don’t forget the family for the 9th Annual Adobe Day Fiesta being held at the Olivas Adobe Historical Park Sunday.

The fiesta will run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offer traditional music and dancing with crafts and displays for the whole family.

Ballet Folklorico Regional will dance from noon to 1 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m., and traditional foods will be served all day by the Guadalupanas Society from Mission San Buenaventura. Two separate plays will be performed, one depicting the rancho-era lifestyle and the other the legendary June 15, 1855, robbery at the Olivas Adobe by the infamous outlaw Joaquin Murrietta (1 to 2 p.m.).

Providing the musical entertainment will be the Conjunto Jarocho Hueyapan performing traditional Jarocho music (11 a.m. to noon) of the Veracruz region of Mexico.

Fiesta guests can participate in making tortillas, carving wood, spinning and weaving yarns, roping and learning about leather work. Children can stomp in a pit of mud as part of the process of making adobe bricks. Candy-filled pinatas will be hung at noon.

Tours inside the Olivas Adobe will be held every 15 minutes, while a crafts show can be seen in the nearby courtyard. Video presentations and an exhibit of historic quilts from the 1800s will be presented in the park’s exhibit hall.

The Olivas Adobe is at 4200 Olivas Park Drive, Ventura. Admission is $2, $1 for ages 3 to 12 and free for children under 3. For information, call 658-4726 or 644-4346.
