Government troops unearthed the bodies of 110 policemen in a mass grave in eastern Sri Lanka, a Defense Ministry statement said. The policemen had surrendered to rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam last month after the guerrillas rejected a 13-monthlong cease-fire with government forces. The officers had been shot a single time in the head, the statement said. Meantime, a senior police official said that 45 policemen escaped from rebel captivity Tuesday after killing three guerrillas. The report came as fighting continued in northern Sri Lanka, where security forces killed at least 18 Tamil rebels.
