NEW YORK — New York Mayor David N. Dinkins survived his rematch with Newark, N.J., Mayor Sharpe James, who had smacked Dinkins in the eye with a tennis ball when they met on the court on July 15.
Dinkins also won the Sunday match, which started with James presenting him with a catcher’s mask, goggles and a beginner’s book on tennis. Dinkins insisted that the contest was not a grudge match. “The Uzi I have in my bag is for other purposes,” he joked. Before the one-on-one game with James, Dinkins and singer Melba Moore lost a doubles match to James and Saqueta Bell, wife of Robert (Kool) Bell of Kool and the Gang. The games were part of a fund-raiser for the Black Tennis and Sports Foundation.
