Santa Paula Councilman John A. F. Melton became the first of a growing field of potential City Council candidates to file his papers for candidacy with the city clerk’s office.
In the Nov. 6 election, council seats occupied by Mayor Kay Wilson, Councilman Carl Barringer and Melton will be up for grabs. Neither Wilson nor Barringer plan to run for reelection, said Stacey MacDonald, Santa Paula city clerk.
Six other potential candidates have pulled papers but have yet to file for candidacy with the clerk. They are Wayne Johnson and Bob Borrego, both on the Santa Paula Planning Commission; Margaret Ely, a legal assistant with the Ventura County public defender’s office; Jesse Ornelas, project manager of Cabrillo Economic Development Assn.; Flo Zachrejshek, a small-business owner; and John Stockdill, a retired Santa Paula High School teacher.
The filing deadline is Aug. 15.
