Montgomery Ward, Sears End Talks: Montgomery Ward & Co. and Sears, Roebuck & Co. announced that the two retailers had terminated talks but declined to indicate what the discussions had entailed. The retail chains said in separate, but nearly identical one-paragraph statements that the companies had discussed “certain joint opportunities.” However, the chains decided to remain independent retailers, the statements said. Spokesmen for both companies would not comment on whether the retailers had considered merging.
