Hans Paul Verhoef; AIDS Victim Was Jailed

Hans Paul Verhoef, 33, a Dutch victim of AIDS who was imprisoned in Minnesota last year for failing to declare he had the disease on arrival in the United States. Verhoef, on his way to an AIDS conference in San Francisco, was jailed under a 1987 law permitting the Immigration and Naturalization Service to deny entry to visitors with AIDS. After five days’ imprisonment, he was released by a federal judge who waived the law and allowed him to attend the conference. On July 23 in Delft, the Netherlands, of AIDS.
