Oxnard College was one of six community colleges in California awarded almost $500,000 by the U. S. Department of Education, said Ruth Hemming, vice president of student services.
The money is intended to help the college provide better service to low-income, minority and academically disadvantaged students and develop new sources of support from the community.
The $499,989 award may not be used for construction or improvement of buildings.
The student body is about 50% minority, including 40% Latino, Hemming said.
