WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Gambian Talks May Delay Intervention

One of Liberia’s two rebel leaders agreed to discuss the civil war with the president of Gambia, a move expected to delay the intervention of a multinational peacekeeping force. The rebel, Charles Taylor, had threatened to attack the five-nation force, which West African leaders have mobilized to enforce a cease-fire in Monrovia, the Liberian capital. Taylor, after losing a skirmish with soldiers loyal to President Samuel K. Doe, announced he had accepted an invitation from Gambia’s Dawda Jawara.
