To celebrate the silver anniversary of “The Sound of Music,” 20th Century Fox will re-release the Oscar-winning musical on Aug. 24, the studio announced Wednesday.
Winner of five Academy Awards, “The Sound of Music” made its debut in 1965 and was a commercial hit, grossing $57 million over an unprecedented 4 1/2-year run.
The soundtrack album, featuring Julie Andrews, sold 10 million copies worldwide.
The film will be re-released in Los Angeles and New York only.
In addition to Miss Andrews, “The Sound of Music” stars Christopher Plummer and Eleanor Parker. The Rodgers-Hammerstein musical follows a singing family in war-torn Austria.
The Aug. 23 gala party will be attended by Andrews, the film’s director, Robert Wise, and six of the actors who played children in the film.
