WORLD : Gorbachev to Focus on Economy

MOSCOW — President Mikhail S. Gorbachev is interrupting his summer vacation in the Crimea and returning to Moscow to work on his program for restructuring the Soviet economy, Tass reported today.
The news agency quoted Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin, who broke off his tour of the vast Russian republic on Wednesday for similar reasons.
Tass said Gorbachev is expected to return to Moscow “within the next days.” Gorbachev began his vacation in early August and had been expected to be away from the capital for a month.
Gorbachev and Yeltsin agreed earlier this month to draft a joint program for moving toward a market economy, based on the “500 Days” program developed by economists in the Russian republic.
