The NBA and the NBA Players Assn. agreed to let the players reconsider a proposal to create a pre-pension benefit plan. Many NBA players, including Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, have opposed the plan because of its negative effects on the salary cap and free agency.
In response to the players’ opposition of the plan, it will be put to a vote Sept. 10, when player representatives from the 27 teams will meet to reconsider it. The plan would reduce this year’s salary cap by about $1.7 million and is expected to cause even greater reductions for the next three years.
