A 35-year-old Pacoima man stopped on the side of California 118 Thursday morning, later tried to elude a highway patrolman by making a U-turn on the highway, and hit a pickup truck while driving on the wrong side of the road, officials said.
The man then fled down the center divider until he ran into the open car door of a driver who had stopped to help, they said.
Gustavo Carillo was being held on suspicion of drunk driving and other offenses, Sgt. Cole McDaniel of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said. Bail was set at $5,000.
Carillo was traveling east on the California 118, west of Rocky Peak Road near Simi Valley, when he made a non-emergency stop, Officer Jim Utter of the CHP said.
Another officer saw the driver at Rocky Peak Road and entered the freeway ahead of Carillo to wait for him to pass.
Instead, Carillo made an abrupt turn and began heading west on the highway, Utter said.
