Junior Seau in Chargers Camp, One Day Tardy

From Associated Press

Rookie linebacker Junior Seau reported to the San Diego Chargers training camp this morning, a day behind schedule.

Seau, the club’s first-round draft pick, missed Sunday night’s appointment to sign the five-year, $4.525 million deal to which he verbally agreed Thursday while vacationing in the Mexican resort of Cancun.

His agent, Steve Feldman, called general manager Bobby Beathard to inform him that Seau had missed his plane and would be brought to camp by Feldman upon arrival in San Diego.

Seau’s failure to report to camp Sunday had Chargers officials wondering about Seau’s intentions.

“We’re not going to worry about it. There’s enough to be concerned about with the guys who are here,” Beathard said.

Seau’s absence Sunday was thought to be related to his unhappiness with the offer he accepted shortly before it would have been reduced by $500,000 under a club-imposed deadline.

Feldman, who did not immediately return phone calls, has said that Seau was irritated at Beathard and the Chargers for forcing him to accept less money than he thought he deserved.

The Orange County-based agent also has refused to make Seau available for telephone interviews, saying the former Southern Cal standout is “too upset” about his contract negotiations.

Beathard said he has no reason to believe that Seau will renege on his agreement to sign the contract, but indicated that his patience is running thin.

“It’s just a game, and we aren’t going to play their game much longer,” Beathard said

“If he’s as unhappy as (Feldman has said), my only advice would be maybe it’s better he doesn’t come in. If he’s that unhappy about coming here, maybe he ought to do something else.”
