LAUSANNE, Switzerland — China has joined an international ban on ivory trading aimed at saving Africa’s elephants from extinction.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species said in a statement today that China’s decision reduced to five the number of countries refusing to enforce the ban. All are ivory producers.
The 103-nation CITES voted after bitter debate in October to impose a moratorium on ivory trading starting last January.
Their numbers fell to 600,000 last year from 1.3 million in the late 1970s.
