WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Doe Loyalists Turn Big Guns on Rebels

Surviving soldiers of slain Liberian President Samuel K. Doe bombarded rebels with cannons from the roof of the executive mansion in Monrovia. Two days after the coup led by Prince Johnson, one of two rival rebel leaders, shells exploded and gunfire crackled as rebel fighters scoured the city to flush out the holdouts, estimated to number about 230. Meanwhile, Gambian President Dawda Jawara said that Doe’s men had asked the five-nation West African force in Monrovia to help them get out of the city. Jawara, visiting Zimbabwe, said that Doe’s death likely would prolong the civil war.
