A Guide to the Best of Southern California : AT HOME : It’s Magic

ADULTS often lose track of their childhood hobbies. At least that’s what magician Jim Kahlert banks on. Kahlert, a regular at the Magic Castle, has for 15 years been teaching a comprehensive magic course ($135) to magic enthusiasts as well as, he says, “adults who don’t know how to pursue a hobby.”
Kahlert bases his classes and his own magic on the notion that tricks themselves are relatively useless until combined into a show. “Ammunition is no good if you can’t pull the trigger.” There are no prerequisites for his six-week course, which focus on tricks that can be performed around a coffee table, using cards, money, rope and silks. “No straitjackets,” he promises.
