Council Votes $3.2 Million to Upgrade Landfill

The Los Angeles City Council voted 12 to 0 Tuesday to spend $3.2 million to upgrade its Lopez Canyon landfill that will include sharply expanding a pipeline system to keep smelly methane gas leaks from annoying the nearby Lake View Terrace community.
The vote came on a motion by Councilman Ernani Bernardi, a critic of the city-owned landfill, to authorize the expenditure as part of an agreement between the city and a state air pollution agency.
Bernardi said later that although the plan may satisfy the South Coast Air Quality Management District staff’s concerns about the landfill, it may not meet all the concerns of the AQMD’s Board of Directors or the community.
