Legends of Chumash to Be Brought to Life

Illusions Theatre celebrates “The Spirit of the Chumash” in Ojai’s Libbey Bowl when six myths and legends are brought to life starting Friday in a collection of oral narratives adapted for stage.
“The production is based on Tom Blackburn’s ‘December Child,’ capturing the beliefs, the good times, the bad times and the creative genius of the Chumash people,” said Bettie Ridenour, who is director of the Illusions Theatre.
A cast of 25 put on replicas of Chumash clothes and masks, based on research by the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, and perform six stories and two dances.
“We bring to life symbolic characters from cave paintings and tell their story through narration and dance,” Ridenour said.
Original choreography will be accompanied by two musicians.
Opening 7:30 p.m. Friday, the production will continue Saturday, and Sept. 28 and 29.
Libbey Bowl is in Libbey Park at Ojai Avenue and Signal Street.
Tickets are $6, $3.50 for senior citizens and children under 12. Call 646-3533.
