WORLD IN BRIEF : NICARAGUA : Police Break Up Protest by Unions

About 300 Nicaraguan police cleared striking workers from the government bus depot in Managua, and tires smoldered in city streets from anti-government disturbances led by Sandinista unions. At the same time, the government, businesses and some unions met for a second day in talks aimed at rescuing the economy. The Sandinistas oppose large-scale layoffs, a part of President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro’s austerity plan.
