WASHINGTON — Part of a cargo door that tore away from a United Airlines jet over the Pacific Ocean in 1989 has been recovered from the ocean floor 100 miles south of Honolulu, the National Transportation Safety Board announced today.
Nine people died when the door and a large chunk of fuselage broke off from the Boeing 747 shortly after takeoff from Honolulu International Airport on Feb. 14, 1989.
The safety board said the recovered piece--the lower half of the door--measures 6 feet by 10 feet.
