Tax Increase Small Price to Pay to Stop Canyon’s Development

“Now, It’s What to Do About the Tollway” (Oct. 11) correctly pointed out that preserving Laguna Laurel and the fate of the proposed San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor are two separate issues.
Unfortunately, the story incorrectly reported that there is “$30.2 million in transportation improvements associated with the tollway” that is somehow a part of the Laguna Laurel deal. This most certainly is not the case.
It is true that the Irvine Co. will pay $30.2 million for regional improvements; however, most of that--$23.6 million--is earmarked for adding one lane to Laguna Canyon Road between the San Diego Freeway and El Toro Road. Just $4.8 million is earmarked for the proposed tollway, which may or may not be built.
